Standing Tall: The Facts about Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is the thinning of bones caused by loss of calcium after menopause or other hormonal changes. It can lead to fractures in your wrist, hip, or spine, along with loss of height or stooped posture. Osteoporosis can progress undetected for decades. Often, you have no symptoms until a fracture occurs.

The good news is that osteoporosis is preventable and treatable. While some bone loss is normal as you age, Lake Hospital System can help you reduce excessive bone loss. If you already have osteoporosis, we can help you increase bone density and reduce your chances of breaking a bone.

Take a Stand Against Osteoporosis

Lake Hospital System offers two programs to help prevent osteoporosis. Boning Up on Osteoporosis is a three-part program that focuses on nutrition, medications and the most effective ways to build bone through exercise. The Osteoporosis Prevention Exercise Class is a six-week, hands-on program focusing on strengthening and weight-bearing activities. To register, call the Best of Health Line at 440-953-6000 or 1-800-454-9800.

The Gold Standard for Detecting Osteoporosis

An X-ray called DEXA (Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) is the most accurate way to measure bone density.

A DEXA screening is quick, easy and painless. Lake Hospital System offers DEXA testing at the LakeWest Hospital, Mentor Medical Campus, the Madison Medical Campus and the Chardon Medical Campus.

Screening for low bone density can also be done with a quick ultrasonic measurement of the heel bone. Lake Hospital System periodically offers free heel screening at community events.

If you believe you are at risk for osteoporosis, talk with your doctor and ask about a DEXA screening. If you don't have a doctor, call the Best of Health Line at 440-953-6000 or 1-800-454-9800 for a physician referral. A number of LHS physicians specialize in osteoporosis diagnosis and treatment.

Lake Hospital System is a member of the National Osteoporosis Foundation and is listed on its referral program.

Take this quiz to find out if you are at risk for osteoporosis!
