MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)

MRI uses a strong magnetic field and a sophisticated computer system to construct detailed, cross-sectional images of the body. These enhanced, high-resolution images help physicians study the brain, spine, joints (sports medicine), chest, abdomen, and pelvis. MR Angiography allows for noninvasive study of the vascular system.

Lake Hospital System's 1.5 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging Unit and powerful 3-D imaging work stations at LakeEast Hospital, LakeWest Hospital and the  Mentor Medical Campus represent the newest and most advanced technology available today. MRI breast imaging and biopsy capabilities are available at LakeWest Hospital and the Mentor Medical Campus.

Lake Hospital System's MRI services are accredited by the American College of Radiology, a distinction not shared by every MRI facility in the area.

What to Expect

During the MRI, you will lie on a table. The table will move slowly into the scanner. If you are extremely claustrophobic, a light sedative may be administered, which may extend your stay following the procedure. You will need someone to drive you home. You will be asked to lie still during the scanning sequences. A contrast dye, which does not contain iodine, may be injected through a vein in your arm to highlight certain tissues. During the exam, you will hear different noises like loud tapping or knocking. Earplugs and/or headphones will be provided. You will be able to communicate with the technologist at any time.

A radiologist will interpret your exam and a report will be sent to your physician, who will discuss the results with you.

Preparing for Your MRI

Because of the strong magnetic field, you will need to complete a short questionnaire about any metal objects in your body (joint replacements, pacemaker, artificial valves, IUD, implants, bullets or shrapnel). Surgical clips, pins, screws or staples usually do not cause a problem if they have been in place more than four to six weeks. You will need to remove the following items before the MRI exam -- wallet, keys, dentures, purse, watch, hair clips, coins, credit cards, hearing aids, jewelry and eye glasses.

  • The procedure takes 30-60 minutes.
  • Inform your physician or x-ray technologist if you are or may be pregnant.
  • If you have known or suspected kidney disease or you are over 65, your physician may order lab work before the day of your exam to determine how well your kidneys are functioning.
  • If you have concerns about anxiety or claustrophobia, please discuss this with your physician. He may wish to prescribe an oral sedative for you to take before your exam. If you receive a sedative, you will need to have a family member or friend drive you home.
  • Please register 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment.
  • Please bring a complete list of your medications, vitamins and supplements to your appointment.
  • Please bring the physician order to your appointment.
